Speyer Dom Audi R8

A few weeks ago I visited the Dom in Speyer, Germany. This cathedral is the largest of its kind (Romanesque) ever built. Visited by Pope John-Paul II in the 1987 and declared a world UNESCO heritage site in 1981, the Kaiserdom zu Speyer certainly is one of the world’s most significant cultural sites.

The structure is predominately made of red sandstone. The roofs appear to be copper and have turned green from years of tarnish. The interior is rather spectacular. It was very quiet when I visited and I often find myself extremely reflective and penitent when I enter a cathedral.

I lit up a few candles and thought about the hundreds of others around mine and all the petitions and hopes that were represented there.

There was a bit of spectacle outside; parked in front of the cathedral was a new Audi R8. It felt ridiculous to see people snapping photographs of this 100,000 euro vehicle (built with Lamborghini technology) with a UNESCO heritage site in the background.
